Our Process

Each piece of ceramic is hand-built.

What does that mean?

There are three basic approaches to creating ceramic

1) wheel thrown

2) slip mold created

3) hand-built.

While each approach has their challenges and perks, my personal favorite way to create my work is through hand building each item

The first step is rolling out the clay and turning it into a slab

(a flat piece of clay).  I prefer to build from slabs because, this way, I am able to manipulate the clay easier and shape it into the desired vessel.  I am also able to easily add fun textures into the clay if it is a slab.

I then use a stencil that I created and cut the slab into the desired shape

From there, I attach the end piece and turn it into a vessel and add the base of the item.  I then let it dry a little before I add more to it, like a handle or feet (the base).  Then clean it up, removing rough edges and extra clay.

After it’s shaped and dried, it is either ready for a bisque fire, or I add prints to the pieces.

The prints are drawn and created by me.  I like to use prints to keep the images more consistent, however, since the prints are created on round objects and other factors, each print still has some variation.

After the bisque fire, it is ready to glaze and ready for the final kiln firing!

And voila!
